This 2km-long line, the first of its kind in Spain, will initially serve five stations between Jaume I University and Ribalta Park, near a shopping centre and a modern, fast-expanding district. The city plans to eventually extend this first line to a 20km-long route with dedicated lanes for the guided vehicles.
The vehicles selected for the line are 12m-long Civis new-generation trolleybuses manufactured by Irisbus Iveco. They feature electric wheel-motors housed in the rear wheels: this eliminates bulky components such as the gearbox and driveshaft, thus creating a low, flat floor right along the bus.
Accommodating 22 seats, including four wider seats for persons with reduced mobility, and a space for a wheelchair passenger, Castellon’s Civis buses have full air-conditioning and Iveco medium-power diesel engines, which provide necessary power when their trolley poles are not connected to the overhead power lines.
This bus line, which is designed to enhance the metropolitan area’s dedicated-lane public-transport offer, will be continuously guided: the Optiguide system will operate not only when the vehicle docks at stations, but also right along the line.
Siemens’ Optiguide optical guidance system allows the vehicle to very accurately follow the ideal route painted on the road and to dock as close to station platforms as possible. The line into bends is also calculated to ensure maximum comfort for passengers. Optiguide offers passengers comfortable, ground-level transfer between platform and vehicle, and meets everyone’s accessibility needs, especially those of persons with reduced mobility.
The Optiguide system already equips 66 Irisbus Agora and Citelis buses in the TEOR network in Rouen, France. It is also currently being installed for High Service Level Bus lines in Nîmes, France, and Bologna, Italy, which respectively operate Irisbus Iveco’s Crealis and Civis buses.
Optiguide is an optical guidance system patented by Siemens Transportation Systems.
